Model History and Information: The M42 Duster mounted twin 40 mm Bofors guns on a light-tank chassis to defend mobile formations from aircraft. By Vietnam, where enemy air attacks were rare, its rapid fire found a new purpose against ground targets and perimeter attacks. Crews valued the weapon's immediate, visible firepower, while the open turret exposed them to the same battlefield they were defending. General Motors built 3,700 M42s between 1952 and 1960, using components from the M41 light tank, and the type remained in US service until 1988.
