Picatinny Arsenal was asked in 1949 to build an artillery piece that could fire a nuclear shell. The designer scaled a 240 mm howitzer round up to 280 mm and borrowed the carriage concept from the German K5 railway gun, which is also where the nickname came from, by way of the Anzio Annie guns of the Italian campaign. On 25 May 1953, at the Nevada Test Site, the gun fired the only nuclear artillery shell ever launched from a cannon, a fifteen kiloton warhead that detonated some seven miles downrange. About twenty were built and deployed to West Germany, South Korea and Okinawa.
