Model History and Information: The Mazda MX-5 Miata was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1989. Mazda set out to build a compact two-seat roadster with rear-wheel drive, accepting the cost of a new powertrain to obtain the handling of the classic lightweight sports cars. Its engineers named the development concept Jinba Ittai, meaning rider and horse as one. The first generation, known as the NA, launched with a 1.6-liter engine, and a 1.8-liter was added in July 1993. It reached US dealers in May 1989 as a 1990 model at just over 2,000 pounds, and went on sale in Japan in September 1989 as the Eunos Roadster.
