Mazda set out to build a compact two-seat roadster with rear-wheel drive, accepting the cost of a new powertrain to obtain the handling of the classic lightweight sports cars. Its engineers named the development concept Jinba Ittai, meaning rider and horse as one. The first generation, known as the NA, launched with a 1.6-liter engine, and a 1.8-liter was added in July 1993.
