Model History and Information: Designed by Ed Heinemann at Douglas Aircraft to meet a Navy requirement for a lightweight carrier attack aircraft, the A-4 Skyhawk first flew as the XA4D-1 prototype on June 22, 1954, and entered fleet service on October 1, 1956. The A-4C, originally designated A4D-2N, added an AN/APG-53A radar and a low-altitude bombing system for night and adverse-weather strikes. Douglas built 638 A-4Cs, making it the most numerous Skyhawk variant, and it served as the U.S. Navy's primary light-attack aircraft during the early years of the Vietnam War before newer variants took over later missions. Marine Corps A-4s, including C models, continued flying into the 1970s.
