Model History and Information: East Germany's air arm, part of the National People's Army, was among the many Warsaw Pact forces to operate the MiG-17 in large numbers. Deliveries of the swept-wing fighter, including licence-built Polish Lim examples, began in the 1950s, and the afterburner-equipped MiG-17F served in both the day-fighter and fighter-bomber roles. This aircraft carries the markings of a fighter-bomber wing, Jagdbombenfliegergeschwader 37, in the late 1960s. Armed with cannon and able to carry rocket pods for ground attack, the MiG-17F equipped East German units until more modern Soviet types gradually took over the front-line mission.
