Model History and Information: The MiG-21SM was the Soviet domestic third-generation Fishbed, equipping front-line and training units with the RP-22 Sapfir radar, an internal GSh-23L cannon and the R-13-300 engine. Alongside operational regiments, aircraft of this generation served with training aviation regiments, where instructors and students built the interception and handling skills required before assignment to combat units. Training-aviation regiments matched to higher military aviation schools used single-seat MiG-21SMs in the advanced-training role during the 1980s. This model represents such an aircraft in Kharkov Higher Military Aviation School, 812th UAP markings, dated August 1991, in the final months of the Soviet Union.
