Model History and Information: The Mitsubishi A6M2 Model 21 Zero was a single-seat fighter operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Second World War. Its metal airframe, retractable undercarriage and folding wingtips suited carrier operations. Allied accounts emphasized the Zero's manoeuvrability and range; it was a formidable opponent for early-war fighters such as the Grumman Wildcat. The design lacked pilot armour and protected fuel tanks, liabilities that Allied airmen learned to exploit with tactics that avoided close turning fights. A6M2s also operated from land bases in the South Pacific.
