North American P-51D Mustang, 'Moonbeam McSWINE', William T. 'Bill' Whisner Jr, 1945
Product Dimensions: 5.43 x 6.10 x 1.38 in.
Model History and Information: North American Aviation developed the Mustang for a British requirement, and its Merlin-powered versions became long-range escorts for Allied bombers in the Second World War. The P-51D carried six .50-caliber machine guns and could protect bombers on missions deep into Germany. Captain William T. Whisner flew with the 487th Fighter Squadron, 352nd Fighter Group, and the name “Moonbeam McSwine” was associated with his wartime Mustang. His combat record extended beyond Europe: after the war, he also became an American ace in Korea. The name survives on a restored Mustang painted in his aircraft's markings.
