Model History and Information: The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the heaviest and most durable fighter aircraft of World War II, built around a powerful radial engine, a rugged airframe, and eight .50-caliber machine guns. Lt. Col. Francis S. "Gabby" Gabreski flew the P-47 with the 56th Fighter Group, the "Wolfpack," on bomber-escort and ground-attack missions over Europe. By July 1944 he had scored 28 aerial victories, the most of any American fighter pilot in the European theater, before being forced down during a strafing run near Niedermendig, Germany, on 20 July 1944, and taken prisoner. Nicknamed the "Jug," the P-47's combination of high-altitude performance and structural strength made it effective in both air-to-air combat and ground attack.
