Model History and Information: The 31st Fighter Group began flying North American P-51 Mustangs in the Mediterranean theater in spring 1944 after joining the Fifteenth Air Force, and its 309th Fighter Squadron flew them from San Severo, Italy, from April 1944, using the tail code WZ. Capt. Murray D. McLaughlin served with the 309th and is credited with seven aerial victories, including two Me 109s on 13 June 1944 that made him an ace. The P-51B introduced the two-stage Merlin 60 series engine to the Mustang, giving the fighter the high-altitude performance and range needed for bomber escort. The markings on this model follow the aircraft named in the product title.
