Model History and Information: The M26 was the armored tractor unit of the U.S. Army's M25 tank transporter, a 40-ton tank recovery and transport combination introduced in Europe during 1944-45. Nicknamed the "Dragon Wagon," the six-wheel-drive tractor was designed by the Knuckey Truck Company and mass-produced by Pacific Car and Foundry of Seattle. It was powered by a Hall-Scott 440 six-cylinder gasoline engine and, unusually, fitted with both an armored cab and two winches whose combined pull reached about 60 tons, allowing light battlefield recovery. Paired with the Fruehauf-built M15 trailer, it hauled and recovered tanks, artillery and heavy vehicles. Roughly 1,300 M26 and M26A1 tractors were built; later unarmored versions followed, and the type stayed in service into the mid-1950s.
