Model History and Information: The Ausf. N was the last production version of the Panzer III and the only one armed with the short 7.5 cm KwK 37, a gun that fired a far better high-explosive round than the long 5 cm it replaced. Hitler ordered the change in July 1942 to create a support tank for the heavy battalions: at full strength a heavy company fielded ten Ausf. N alongside nine Tigers, the smaller vehicle being far more agile at close quarters than the slow and vulnerable heavy tank. Some 633 were built between June 1942 and August 1943, with a further batch converted from earlier marks.
