Model History and Information: The Panzer IV was the only German tank in production from the first day of the war to the last. The Ausf. H, built from April 1943 and the most numerous single version at 3,774 vehicles, introduced the Schurzen: thin steel plates hung on rails along the hull sides and around the turret. They are often taken for protection against tank rounds, but their real purpose was to defeat Soviet anti-tank rifles, which had been punching through the thin side armour. The Ausf. J that followed kept the skirts, later replacing the hull plates with heavy wire mesh.
