Model History and Information: The Sonderanhänger 116 was a German low-loader trailer developed for the Wehrmacht to move armored vehicles and other loads weighing up to 22 tonnes. Officially introduced in December 1940, it replaced the earlier trial trailer and was used to carry damaged tanks from the front to rear workshops or over longer road distances. It was normally hauled by the heavy Sd.Kfz.9 half-track, and occasionally by heavy tracked prime movers. Its rear chassis, which carried a small cabin, could be detached for loading and reattached so that a second operator could steer the rear wheels, easing maneuvering of the very long trailer. Empty it weighed about 13.4 tonnes and reached roughly 35 tonnes loaded. It equipped tank workshop and recovery units.
