Model History and Information: Work on the Hummel began at Alkett in 1942 to give the panzer divisions artillery that could move with them: a 15 cm sFH 18 heavy field howitzer mounted in an open-topped fighting compartment on the Geschutzwagen III/IV chassis, a hybrid using components of both the Panzer III and Panzer IV. The first vehicles reached the front in the spring of 1943 and about a hundred took part in the fighting at Kursk with the armoured artillery battalions. Ammunition stowage was limited to eighteen rounds, so purpose built carriers accompanied the guns. Around 705 were completed.
