Model History and Information: This Dragon Armor edition is identified as Sd.Kfz.184 FERDINAND #113 s.Pz.Jg.Abt..653 (1:72 Scale). Its finish and unit caption distinguish the collectible; the account below addresses the documented history of the real vehicle type. Ninety-one of these heavy tank destroyers were built in 1943 on hulls left over from Porsche's unsuccessful contender for the Tiger contract, and were named after the designer, Ferdinand Porsche. At around seventy tonnes and armed with the long 8.8 cm Pak 43/2, the vehicle could destroy Soviet armour well beyond the range at which it could be hurt in return. Its combat debut came at Kursk in July 1943, where eighty-nine were committed, the largest deployment of the type; used as a direct assault weapon rather than a stand-off gun, the battalions took heavy losses.
