Model History and Information: Ninety-one of these heavy tank destroyers were completed in 1943 on hulls left over from Ferdinand Porsche's unsuccessful contender for the Tiger contract, and were named Ferdinand after their designer; in May 1944 the surviving vehicles were officially renamed Elefant. At around 65 tonnes and armed with the long 8.8 cm Pak 43/2, the vehicle could destroy Soviet armour at ranges beyond which its own thick frontal armour could be penetrated in return. Its combat debut came at Kursk in July 1943, where 89 were committed, the type's largest single deployment; used well forward as an assault weapon rather than a stand-off gun, and hampered by mines and mechanical breakdowns, the battalions involved took heavy losses.
