Model History and Information: The Sd.Kfz.9, nicknamed "Famo" after its principal manufacturer, was the heaviest half-track produced in quantity by Germany during World War II. Entering service from 1938-39, it was powered by a Maybach V12 gasoline engine and served chiefly as a prime mover for very heavy towed artillery, such as the 24 cm Kanone 3, and as a tank recovery vehicle able to haul disabled tanks. Specialized versions mounted cranes for engine changes and field repair, and another variant carried an 8.8 cm gun. Around 2,500 were built between 1938 and 1945 by FAMO, Vomag and Tatra. Used on all fronts, it towed vehicles as large as the Tiger I, frequently requiring more than one unit to move the heaviest tanks.
