Model History and Information: This model represents NASA's Space Shuttle, a partially reusable spacecraft system operated from 1981 to 2011. Five orbiters were built and flown on a combined 135 missions, launching vertically with a large external fuel tank and two solid rocket boosters before returning to Earth as a winged glider. The orbiter carried astronauts and cargo into low Earth orbit, where it deployed and serviced satellites, including the Hubble Space Telescope, and helped build the International Space Station. Two orbiters, Challenger and Columbia, were lost in accidents during the program. This toy is finished with a fictional “Space Explorer” logo rather than a specific orbiter's markings, following the general winged-orbiter shape used throughout the program.
