StuG.III Ausf.A "Michael Wittmann" Barbarossa 1941
Product Dimensions: 2.94 x 1.60 x 1.07 in.
Model History and Information: Before he became one of the war's best-known Tiger commanders, Michael Wittmann served with the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler's Sturmgeschutz battery, part of SS Panzer Regiment 1, where he commanded a StuG III rather than a turreted tank. His unit moved to the Eastern Front in spring 1941 for the opening of Operation Barbarossa; only some two years later, in 1943, did Wittmann take command of a Tiger I, the tank with which he later became associated. The Ausf.A itself was the first production version of the German assault gun, built on the Panzer III chassis with a short 7.5 cm StuK 37 L/24 gun in a fixed casemate for close infantry support rather than long-range tank duels.
