Model History and Information: Production of the StuG III Ausf.B began in June 1940 after Daimler-Benz, the maker of the Ausf.A, proved too committed to Panzer III and half-track output to continue the line. Alkett in Berlin took over and built roughly 300 Ausf.B vehicles by May 1941, still armed with the short 7.5 cm StuK 37 gun in a fixed casemate. The chassis gained wider 380 mm tracks, an improved six-speed transmission that replaced a troublesome ten-speed unit, and a redesigned drive sprocket and return-roller layout. By the summer of 1941, independent assault-gun battalions equipped with these vehicles supported German infantry divisions in the invasion of the Soviet Union, using the type's low silhouette and direct-fire gun against strongpoints and armor at close range.
