Model History and Information: Early-production StuG III Ausf.G vehicles marked the point at which the assault gun became a genuine tank killer. The long 7.5 cm StuK 40 gun could engage enemy armor at ranges the earlier short-barreled StuGs could not reach, while the low, turretless silhouette kept the target profile small. Because the vehicle's slab sides and flat engine deck gave it little natural cover, German crews commonly wired cut branches and foliage to small rings welded onto the hull and superstructure, a documented field-camouflage practice used to break up the vehicle's outline. As tank losses mounted, the StuG's lower cost and shared Panzer III components made it an increasingly important substitute for battle tanks.
