Model History and Information: The StuG III Ausf.G was the definitive and most heavily produced version of the assault gun, built from December 1942 through the end of the war by Alkett, MIAG and MAN in a run of roughly 8,400 vehicles, more than all earlier variants combined. It widened the fighting compartment and, from May 1943, standardized 80 mm frontal armor and added Schürzen side-skirt plates as protection against Soviet anti-tank rifles. It kept the long 7.5 cm StuK 40 gun introduced on the Ausf.F, which let it fight tanks as well as support infantry, and by the end of the war more StuG IIIs had been built than any other German armored fighting vehicle, cementing its shift from an infantry-support weapon into a substitute battle tank.
