Model History and Information: The Sturmgeschutz III grew out of a German requirement for artillery that could keep up with infantry and knock out fortifications by direct fire. Daimler-Benz used the chassis and running gear of the Panzer III, and the first production vehicles appeared in 1940 with a short 7.5 cm gun in a fixed casemate rather than a turret, which kept the silhouette low and the cost down. From the Ausf. F of 1942 the vehicle was rearmed with a long 7.5 cm gun and became as much a tank destroyer as an assault gun. Production of all variants reached 9,250, more than any other German armoured vehicle of the war, and it served on every front.
