Model History and Information: This machine depicts the Sukhoi single-seat fighter as presented at the June 1989 Salon de l'Aeronautique at Paris-Le Bourget, the type's first public appearance in the West. Test pilot Viktor Pugachev flew the demonstration that introduced the high-angle-of-attack manoeuvre later named the Pugachev Cobra, in which the nose is pitched back past the vertical while the aircraft continues briefly along its original flight path before recovering. Many analysts had assumed such a manoeuvre was aerodynamically impossible. The routine gave Western observers their first detailed look at the Flanker's low-speed handling, thrust margin and fly-by-wire behaviour, and made both the aircraft and its pilot internationally famous. A two-seat trainer variant appeared at the same show.
