Model History and Information: Sukhoi's Su-27 first flew on 20 May 1977 and entered Soviet air force service in 1985 as a long-range, twin-engine air-superiority fighter. Its large wing and infrared search-and-track system, mounted ahead of the cockpit, let it engage targets without relying solely on radar, while its aerodynamic layout gave it exceptional maneuverability for its era. The design became the basis for the wider Flanker family, including two-seat trainer, naval and multirole derivatives built in Russia, China and other operators over the following decades.
