Model History and Information: The designation marks a naval prototype in the T-10K series from which the carrier-based Su-33 was developed. From 1987 these airframes added canard foreplanes, an arrestor hook, strengthened structure and carrier-approach avionics to the basic Flanker. The first T-10K flew on 17 August 1987 with test pilot Viktor Pugachev, who also made the family's first arrested deck landing aboard the carrier later named Admiral Kuznetsov in 1989. Fifth-series airframes supported the extended trials programme that ran into the mid-1990s before the production Su-33 was formally introduced in 1998. Although shown here in a national air-arm context, the T-10K machines were experimental aircraft flown by industry and naval test crews rather than an operational combat unit.
