Model History and Information: The Sukhoi Su-34, NATO reporting name Fullback, is a twin-engine strike aircraft built by the Novosibirsk Aircraft Production Association. Its two crew sit side by side, and it is powered by two Saturn AL-31FM1 afterburning turbofans rated at 132 kN (30,000 lbf) each with afterburner. The prototype first flew on 13 April 1990, production began in 2006 and the type formally entered Russian service on 20 March 2014. Janes reported Su-34s operating over Ukraine for the first time on 28 February 2022, during Russia's invasion. Before guided glide-bomb kits were introduced in 2023, a shortage of precision weapons forced the aircraft to fly low, exposing them to Ukrainian air defences.
