It made its first flight on 3 March 2011 from Komsomolsk-on-Amur, flown by test pilot Sergey Bogdan, just over a year after the first prototype took to the air on 29 January 2010. The aircraft was later used as an engine testbed, including for the AL-51F-1, known as izdeliye 30, whose first flight was on 5 December 2017.
