Henschel began building it at Kassel in August 1942 at twenty-five vehicles a month, a rate that peaked at 104 in April 1944. It was redesignated Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. E in March 1943. In all 1,347 were completed before production ended in August 1944 in favour of the Tiger II, a small number for a machine that shaped how the Allies fought armour.
