Model History and Information: Osan Air Base in South Korea is home to the 5th Reconnaissance Squadron, the 'Black Cats', which flies the U-2 on high-altitude surveillance missions over the Korean Peninsula. The enlarged U-2R airframe first flew in 1967, and a second production batch was built in the 1980s as the TR-1; all surviving aircraft were later brought to the U-2S standard with the General Electric F118 engine. Able to operate above 70,000 feet, the U-2 remains one of the longest-serving aircraft types in the U.S. Air Force.
