Model History and Information: The quarter-ton 4x4 utility truck, universally known as the jeep, was produced in vast numbers by Willys-Overland and Ford from 1941 and became the standard light vehicle of American and Allied forces. Simple and rugged, it served for reconnaissance, liaison and transport in every theater, including the Pacific. General Douglas MacArthur commanded Allied forces in the South West Pacific Area and returned to the Philippines, with the Leyte landings beginning in October 1944. Senior commanders routinely used jeeps as staff transport.
