Model History and Information: The M1083 is the 5-ton cargo member of the U.S. Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles. Its 6x6 chassis moves supplies, personnel and equipment over roads and rough ground, the unglamorous work that keeps combat units operating. The FMTV family replaced several older Army truck types and became a logistics backbone for deployments after the Cold War. Stewart & Stevenson began building the M1083 under a 1991 Army contract, with the first trucks entering service in January 1996, and later manufacturers kept the basic layout in production for both standard and armoured-cab versions.
