Model History and Information: The Volkswagen Beetle, designed by Ferdinand Porsche as the Type 1, began series production in Wolfsburg shortly after Christmas 1945. The 1200 was the standard model, listed by Volkswagen from 1954 to 1973 and continued as the 1200L until 1985. In 1972 the Beetle passed the Ford Model T's overall sales total, a record it held until 2002, when the Golf overtook it.
