Model History and Information: The M3 was an American armored car developed by the White Motor Company, evolving from the M1 and M2 scout cars of the 1930s. The definitive M3A1 entered production in 1939, and roughly 20,918 were built through 1944 on a four-wheel-drive truck chassis with an open-topped, lightly armored hull and a crew of up to eight. A skate rail around the fighting compartment allowed a .50 caliber M2 Browning and .30 caliber machine guns to be mounted. U.S. cavalry used it for reconnaissance, screening, and as a command vehicle in North Africa and Sicily; it was fast and reliable but hampered by poor off-road mobility and no overhead protection, and was largely replaced by the M8 Greyhound. Many were supplied to Allied forces under Lend-Lease.
